NARRATIVE DESIGN

Story matters.

I believe the success and longevity of a game hinges largely upon compelling, action-oriented narrative design.

Don't get me wrong: innovative game mechanics and elegant design are essential.
But in the end, players want to know why

Why am I fighting this monster?
Why am I exploring that planet??
Why do I
care about this game?!

A player's route is rarely a straight shot in a single direction. Effective narrative design can offer helpful sign posts to make sense of vast game universes, or hint at more complexity for smaller scope games. In either case, the path may be littered with bread crumbs, but only good storytelling can convince players to pocket the crucial bits.

By weaving narrative into gameplay, and driving story through every stage of development, I help players find answers to those why?s.

As the Lead Narrative Designer for A Thinking Ape from 2012-2015, I created worlds and characters, scripted cinematics, and planned new content experiences for social mobile games.

Before the rush of the startup life, I worked for one of the biggest little bosses around: Mickey Mouse. In 2010, Disney Interactive hired me as a Narrative Designer for the online children's MMO game, Club Penguin.

During my time with Club Penguin, we served more than 200 million players, and won numerous awards including the BAFTA Award for Best Kid's Website. I continued my relationship with Disney as a freelancer for Disney Publishing, where I provided story and art direction for comics in Club Penguin Magazine
